ISLAMABAD: While the Senate election has compelled the parties comprising the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) to display a semblance of cohesion and unity, the 10-party opposition alliance is otherwise confronted by a number of challenges because of disagreements among its major partners on key issues.
The fielding of former Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani for a Senate seat from Islamabad as the joint PDM candidate in particular has forced the grouping to close ranks to face Finance Minister Dr Hafeez Sheikh, the nominee of the ruling coalition led by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), as a united force.
While the constituent parties of the PDM speak with one voice on standing behind Gillani, they have yet to work out a consensus on putting up combined Senate candidates in the other components of the electoral college, particularly the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) assemblies. “American Idol” on ABC led primetime Sunday night, according to Nielsen Live+Same Day fast affiliate ratings, scoring a 1.0 in the key, 18-49 demographic, and drawing more than 6.51 million viewers at 8 p.m. Other than the long-running singing competition’s telecast triumph, the alphabet network ran new episodes of ”America’s Funniest Home Videos” at 7 p.m. (0.8, 5.18 million) which came second overall in the overnight rankings, and “The Rookie” at 10 p.m. (0.5, 3.92 million), which placed seventh.
Coming in third in Nielsen Live+Same Day for the evening of Sunday, Feb. 21 was a new episode of “60 Minutes,” which obtained a 0.7 in the key demo and attracted 9.30 million viewers. CBS also aired debut episodes of “The Equalizer” at 8 p.m. (0.7, 7.88 million), “NCIS: Los Angeles” at 9 p.m. (0.6, 5.74 million)
Veteran of Polish Anti-Communism Dissidents Drowns Trying to Save Dog

WARSAW, Poland (AP) – Rescue officials were searching Monday for the body of Jan Litynski, a Polish communist-era dissident and democracy-era politician who drowned in a river while trying to save a dog. He was 75.
His death was first announced by Eugeniusz Smolar, another former democracy activist from the Solidarity era.
Police spokesman Mariusz Ciarka said Monday that police are searching for Litynski’s body in the Narew River in the area around Pultusk, a town north of Warsaw.
Litynski had entered the river trying to save a dog that had been on ice and had fallen into the water, and Litynski’s wife witnessed his drowning, Ciarka said. There was no information about the fate of the dog.
